The Kibble Kitchen was established in January 2011 by Michelle Duca of Portage, Indiana. The program started to come to life after Michelle started seeing so many request for help with pet food on Craigslist, & speaking with her friends that worked at shelters learning many families were surrendering their pets due to lack of finances. Michelle took the knowledge she learned in her past by working in pet stores, animal shelters and working with various animal rescue groups to create the Kibble Kitchen. The program seemed simple the need was there, and the concept would be to run it as a human food pantry but focusing on pet related items. She spent countless hours to research the internet for other pet food pantries in the US and took each concept to create the beginnings of the pantry.
The program was originally set up to assist families within Porter County, Indiana facing financial hardship. Since the inception of the pantry in 2011 the need for pet food assistance has continued to grow and families have also been assisted with:
- spay and neuter surgeries
- euthanasia when a pet is terminally ill or injured *See our Fur Angel Fund for details
- emergency medical
- flea preventative
The pet food program is continuing to grow, as is the need for additional services. The pantry has been hearing the cries from neighboring counties for assistance, and are currently working to make this happen but with additional services being provided the need for more monetary donations and pet food donations will be needed. The pantry is currently looking for additional resources for donation collection sites in Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties, and volunteers!
